If we could sum up in one word what our volunteers are trained to do, it would be to "LISTEN". Volunteers are trained over a 30-hour course that includes topics such as "What to say to a Dying Person", Palliative Care/Hospice concepts, Needs of the Terminally Ill and Their Families, Loss and Bereavement and Grief, and Listening Skills.
You are supported throughout the entire training and then supported when you receive your first assignment. We focus on the living, not the dying of each of our patients and their families.
Crossroads Hospice Society offers a comprehensive volunteer training program. Level 1: Caring for the Dying and their Families is our introductory program which is offered each fall and winter. This is a 30 hour course which explores:
- Society and loss
- Grief Reactions
- Teens and grief
- Communication Skills
- Listening and helping skills
- Understanding the special needs of the dying
- Spiritual support
- Self care
- Personal confrontation of mortality and practical exercises
- Assisting in a learning process
Pre-registration is advised due to limited space. Contact the Coordinator of Volunteers Tri-Cities at 604-949-2271.
